Me Familia Visits DC

The weekend of the 20th thru the 24th of July, Mom, Dad, and Brother visited me in Washington, DC. We stayed at the Marriott in Adams Morgan. As always, it was wonderful spending time with them and showing them what little I knew of my current locale, the District.

All of my family members had seen the monuments and done the really touristy stuff, so we were free to do more cultural things. Mainly, we dined. We ate at some of the best restaurants in DC, including CityZen on Thursday, Dish on Friday, and the Blue Duck Tavern on Saturday.

We did the museum thing for a while on Friday, but lets face it. We aren't really museum people. We need activities or relaxation. Walking around looking at paintings that only half-interests us is not a good way to spend a vacation. Despite our best efforts, we wandered through the unimpressive Native American Museum and the interesting National Gallery of Art.

We also saw The History of America by the Reduced Shakespeare Company on Friday. Three guys did a great job adding humor to our nation's relatively short past. The performance was at the breath-taking Kennedy Center on the banks of the Potomac.

Saturday, we went to Georgetown. We ate brunch in a little Frenchish restaurant and watched Tiger on his way to British Open victory. We did a little bit of shopping before heading back to the hotel. Navyman Caleb Rose joined us from his boat in Norfolk, Virginia for dinner at the Blue Duck Tavern.

Sunday was spent in Old Town Alexandria. We walked along the river, up and down the old streets, and enjoyed beers at a chic bistro. Before leaving, we walked to the Washington Memorial, which is not the same as the fallus-like Washington Monument, but is instead a Masonic Temple. Dad was happy to visit a place in DC with more obvious Masonic symbolism.

Monday morning, the fun was over. They flew out of Reagan National Airport around 8.
