Dinner with Bryan Caplan

Today I ate dinner with two professors of economics at George Mason University: Bryan Caplan and Ilia Rainer. Admittedly, I had never heard of Dr. Rainer, but read Dr. Caplan's blog regurlarly. It can be found here. Bryan Caplan is an extremely intelligent man, graduating from UC-Berkley for his undergrad and Princeton for his PhD. He is frequently mentioned at Marginal Revolution. I ate with them as part of a semi-interview, semi-informational, and very informal session on graduate economics. I was relaxed, despite being star struck by the extremely large brain sitting across the table from me.

It was a pleasure sharing dinner with both of them. I picked up some incites into the process of doctoral application and selection, the life of an economics academic, and economics in general.

I now know that if I want to get into a top 10 econ phd school, I need to A) Get an 800 on the quantitative section of the GRE, B) Get above a 700 in the Verbal section, C) Read many, many more books, D) Write many, many more papers .

Even then, nothing is guaranteed. Still, I am not totally discouraged. If this is something I am serious about, I need to put my back into it. If I do that, I can probably get into a good grad school. If not, I'll do something else.
